Starting out in Historical Fighting Arts

We don’t expect you to have all the kit on day one. Obtaining gear is an iterative process and it can get expensive. Which is why we keep fees to the bare minimum, so you can prioritise spend on kit and maximise your training.

Just bring yourself along to have fun! We have plenty of loan equipment to enable you to get started in a safe manner and start your journey swinging swords! I will add the warning that before long your home will be spilling over with gear….

You can start training with minimal protective gear or by using loan gear with controlled exercises. We are a friendly group who love passing on our experience. There are no egos; learning is a life long process.

You will soon realise your hands are one of the most vulnerable areas, and this is a good starting point to splurge on protection for – how much you want to spend is up to you – there are plenty of online reviews and suggestions about gloves for varying intensities of weapons sparring. There is no perfect glove or mitten – it is a trade off between ‘dexterity and protection.’ and the intensity of sparring.

Weapons are why we partake in this Art and you’ll soon want your own! Or maybe more than one type! There are plenty of synthetic or steel options available at varying price brackets.

Head & throat protection come next – you’ll tire of loan masks (we do clean them between user!)

Finally, protection for torso, arms, groin and legs – so you can pressure test everything you’ve learnt at full speed and with intent!
